# Is SafeMeet end-to-end encrypted?

No. Here is why, what is encrypted instead, who receives the content of a message, how long it is kept, and when an end-to-end encrypted messenger is the better choice.

Updated October 12, 2026

## Short answer

No. SafeMeet is not end-to-end encrypted. Our servers check every message before it is delivered, so they have to receive its content, and an end-to-end scheme would not allow that check. Your connection to SafeMeet is encrypted with TLS, but our servers and the services named below still receive the text of what you send.

## Why it is not end-to-end encrypted

SafeMeet is built around one rule: a message is checked before it is delivered, not after. An instant filter on our own servers blocks a short, fixed list of phrases on the spot, and each message it lets through goes to an AI moderation model before the other person sees it. A system that checks a message before delivery has to read it, so our servers receive its content, and SafeMeet cannot also be end-to-end encrypted. We chose the check.

That is the trade, stated plainly. The same design is what lets a message be stopped before it reaches the other person. The price is that SafeMeet is not the place for a conversation that has to stay unreadable to the service itself. For the full pipeline, see [how AI moderation works](https://safemeet.now/guides/how-ai-moderation-works).

## What is encrypted

Connections to safemeet.now and app.safemeet.now use HTTPS with TLS 1.2 or newer, and plain HTTP is redirected to HTTPS. Cloudflare sits in front of both sites, and the encrypted (TLS) connection from your browser ends at its edge, so every request, including the messages you send, passes through its network on the way to our servers.

That is all we claim about encryption. It is not end-to-end encryption: the message is readable by the services listed next.

## Who receives the content of a message

- **Our servers** receive every message, because they check it before it is delivered.
- **Cloudflare**, whose network every request passes through on the way to our servers, as described above.
- **Our AI moderation providers.** Groq is the primary provider and OpenRouter is its fallback. Each message our instant filter lets through goes to Groq, and also to OpenRouter if Groq does not return a usable answer. A provider receives the message text and returns a moderation decision; no personal identifiers are sent with it. How long each provider keeps what it receives is governed by that provider's own terms. OpenRouter also scans the images you send before they are delivered.
- **The model in an AI-companion chat.** In an AI-companion chat, the model that writes its replies receives each message you send once it is delivered, together with recent messages from the same chat.
- **Your chat partner** receives the messages that are delivered to them. An email address, a link, a phone number, an @handle or a crypto wallet address in a delivered message is replaced with a placeholder first; see [does SafeMeet hide your phone number](https://safemeet.now/guides/does-safemeet-hide-your-phone-number).

No person reads your messages to decide a moderation or report outcome. Engineers can access an individual message only under a formal legal obligation (a lawful request or an active legal hold). We do not sell data, license data, use data for advertising, or use your conversations to train external AI models.

## How long messages are kept

Message content is deleted 30 days after a conversation ends. Reopening a conversation restarts that clock; there is no other exception. Images sent in a conversation are stored with Backblaze B2 and are deleted on the same 30-day clock. The [privacy policy](https://safemeet.now/privacy) lists everything else we keep, including how long, and which services receive message content.

## What you can do

- Do not share personal information you would not want a stranger to have. Hiding contact details matches patterns, not meaning, so a detail written another way can get past it.
- Leave whenever you like. Skips are free and unlimited, and you can end any chat at any time.
- Report anyone who makes you uncomfortable; [the safety page](https://safemeet.now/safety) shows the controls, and [what happens when you report someone](https://safemeet.now/guides/what-happens-when-you-report-someone) explains what follows.
- Delete your account from the profile menu in the app. It removes your profile, messages, images and sign-in details straight away, except while a ban is active. You can also email hello@safemeet.now to request deletion or an export of your data.

A guest session needs no email, phone number or card, so there is nothing to hand over to start. Whether anonymous chat suits you is covered in [is anonymous chat safe](https://safemeet.now/guides/is-anonymous-chat-safe).

## When an end-to-end encrypted messenger is the better choice

If you need a conversation to stay private from the service itself, use a messenger that is end-to-end encrypted. That fits talking to someone you already know: a friend, family or a group you trust, where nobody needs to be checked before they reach you. Look at how any app you pick describes its encryption, and what it still receives.

SafeMeet is for the other situation: talking to a stranger, where the check before delivery is the point. The [how it works](https://safemeet.now/how-it-works) page walks the whole path from open tab to first hello.

## Questions people ask about SafeMeet and encryption

### Is SafeMeet end-to-end encrypted?

No. SafeMeet is not end-to-end encrypted: our servers check every message before it's delivered, so they receive its content. Our AI moderation providers receive every message our instant filter lets through, and in an AI-companion chat, the model that writes its replies receives each message you send once it is delivered, with the chat's recent messages. Connections to safemeet.now and app.safemeet.now use HTTPS with TLS 1.2 or newer.

### Do you read every message?

We don't. An instant filter checks every message, and AI reads each one it lets through. No person reads your messages to decide a moderation or report outcome, and there is no human review queue. Engineers can access an individual message only under a formal legal obligation (a lawful request or an active legal hold).

### Can the other person see my phone number or email?

Not when it looks like one. In a delivered message, SafeMeet replaces an email address, an http or https link, a phone number, an @handle or a crypto wallet address with \[hidden — personal info\] before your partner sees it. It matches patterns, not meaning, so a detail written another way can get past it. Never share a detail you would not want a stranger to have.

### Is it really anonymous?

Yes. Guest sessions don't require email or profile. We do hash a soft device fingerprint server-side — only used to carry sanctions across browser-clear attempts. Raw IPs and device components are never stored.

### Do I need an account?

No. Tap Start chatting and you get a guest session: no signup, no email, no phone number and no card. Signing in with Google or Apple is optional and keeps your identity across devices. Either way, every message is checked before it's delivered, and you can end any chat at any time.

### What happens if AI moderation goes down?

Messages stop sending. We call this fail-closed: if the moderation provider is unreachable or returns an answer we can't read, the message is blocked instead of being delivered unchecked, and it is not queued to go out later. A message blocked because of an infrastructure failure never counts against the sender.
