Does SafeMeet hide your phone number?

What SafeMeet hides when a message contains contact details, what your chat partner sees, what you see, what is kept, and where the hiding stops.

Updated

Short answer

Yes, for the contact details it recognises. In a delivered message, SafeMeet replaces an email address, a link, a phone number, an @handle or a crypto wallet address with [hidden — personal info]. It matches patterns, not meaning, so a detail written another way can get past it. Never share a detail you would not want a stranger to have.

What gets hidden

When a message is delivered, five kinds of text in it are replaced before your partner sees it:

  • An email address.
  • An http or https link.
  • A phone number: a full ten-digit number, with or without a country code, and with spaces, dots, dashes or brackets. A bare number such as an age is left alone.
  • An @handle: an @ followed by at least two letters, digits, underscores or dots, optionally with a #1234 tag. A clock time such as @5pm is left alone.
  • A Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet address.

Only text is covered, and an edited message is checked and hidden again. The hiding does not run on an AI companion's own messages.

What your partner sees

The words [hidden — personal info] where the detail was, and the rest of your message as you wrote it. It is the same placeholder whatever kind of detail was hidden, so it does not reveal what you typed. Your partner receives the cleaned text only.

What you see

A short note beneath your own message: Personal info was hidden from this message. It appears when something in a delivered message was replaced. It is a note, not a warning, and nothing about it counts against you.

What we keep

The record of a hidden detail holds its kind and how many were hidden: kinds and counts, not the hidden text. Hiding a detail adds no strike, no sanction and no block. The message itself, with the placeholder in place, has its text blanked by an automated sweep thirty days after the conversation ends.

The honest limit

The hiding works on patterns, not meaning. It hides what looks like a phone number, email, link, handle or wallet address, and nothing it does not recognise. A detail written another way can get past it, and it has no pattern at all for a street address, a name or a school. Do not rely on it: never share a detail you would not want a stranger to have.

Images are scanned for safety before delivery, but they are not edited, so nothing inside a picture is hidden. And the safety check reads your original text before the hiding happens. The hiding covers a message that is going to be delivered; a message the check stops is not delivered at all.

Messages that ask for your details

A different case is a message that asks you for your number, your email or your handle. There is nothing of yours in it to hide, so the hiding does nothing, and SafeMeet does not promise that such a request is stopped. What the safety check does with it is covered in what gets blocked: a push for a phone number, an email or a social handle is scored against the personal-data category before delivery. You never have to answer. End the chat, and report it from your inbox if the pressure continues; what happens when you report someone explains what follows.

The surrounding privacy facts

  • SafeMeet has no profiles, usernames or public feed, so there is no page where your details could sit.
  • Message text is blanked by an automated sweep thirty days after a conversation ends; reopening a conversation restarts that clock.
  • A guest account is erased seven days after it expires, unless it is under a ban.
  • You can delete your account from the profile menu in the app, except while a ban is active.

The privacy policy has the full list of what is collected and which services receive message content, and the safety page shows how the rest of the checks fit together.

Questions people ask about phone numbers and contact details

Can the other person see my phone number or email?

Not when it looks like one. In a delivered message, SafeMeet replaces an email address, an http or https link, a phone number, an @handle or a crypto wallet address with [hidden — personal info] before your partner sees it. It matches patterns, not meaning, so a detail written another way can get past it. Never share a detail you would not want a stranger to have.

Does SafeMeet block a message that has a phone number in it?

Not by itself. The number is replaced and the rest of the message is delivered, and hiding a number does not add a strike. Separately, the safety check scores the original text: in our evals a phone number or home address shared in a chat is flagged, a flagged text is delivered with a safety notice to its sender, and one the check scores high enough to block is withheld.

What does my chat partner see instead of my number?

The words [hidden — personal info] in the place of the number, email, link, handle or wallet address, with the rest of your message as you wrote it. It is the same placeholder whatever kind of detail was hidden, so it does not reveal what you typed. Your partner receives the cleaned text only.

How do I know if SafeMeet hid something in my message?

A short note appears beneath your own message: "Personal info was hidden from this message." It shows when something in a delivered message was replaced. It is a note, not a warning, and nothing about it counts against you.

Does SafeMeet keep the phone number or email I typed?

The record of what was hidden holds only the kind and how many, such as one phone number, not the number itself. Your message, with the placeholder in its place, has its text blanked by an automated sweep thirty days after the conversation ends. The safety check reads your original text before it is hidden, and the providers that run it are named in the privacy policy.

What kinds of contact details does SafeMeet hide?

Five kinds: email addresses, http and https links, phone numbers (a full ten-digit number, with or without a country code), @handles, and Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet addresses. A bare number such as an age, and a clock time such as @5pm, are left alone.

Can a phone number still get through?

Yes. It matches patterns, not meaning, so a detail written another way can get past it. It also has no pattern at all for street addresses, names or schools, and it does not hide anything inside an image. Do not rely on it: never share a detail you would not want a stranger to have.

What if someone asks me for my number?

SafeMeet scores that message as a safety signal but does not promise to stop it: a push for a phone number, an email or a social handle is scored against the personal-data category before delivery. You never have to answer. End the chat, and report it from your inbox if the pressure continues.
